Biography
Motoki Kajisaki
Born in 1990 in Higashi-Osaka City, Osaka Prefecture, he is a drummer, beatmaker, and ambient artist. His creative expression extends beyond sound, encompassing graphic design, painting, video, and apparel design. These endeavors are not merely a pursuit of diverse outputs; rather, they reflect his belief that, much like how music has historically intertwined with art and fashion to shape contemporary culture, his own artistic expressions are an inevitable extension of his musical journey.
His relationship with music began during his student years. Captivated by the physicality of sound through drumming, he expanded his exploration into beatmaking and ambient music. In 2015, he moved to the United States, where he spent approximately two years performing as a drummer. During this period, he toured extensively across the U.S. and Mexico, collaborating with world-renowned artists and engineers in recording sessions. Immersed in diverse musical landscapes, he began to question his approach to music. He realized that what is now considered contemporary music was once an everyday form of expression, akin to language, in various cultures. This realization led him to return to Japan, where he delved deeper into graphic design, art, and apparel production—fields that had been part of his life since childhood. Today, he utilizes these skills to create contemporary art that transcends traditional mediums, where the output itself becomes an integral part of the musical composition.
Artistic Philosophy
Motoki Kajisaki-Exploring the Moments
Daily life is a tapestry woven from countless fleeting moments, each transient and interwoven. This seemingly universal concept forms the core of his work. Like gently assigning names to nameless fragments that vanish with the next moment, or extending the briefest traces of time as if to elongate them. He seamlessly navigates various techniques—music, painting, graphic design—to blur the boundaries between the existent and the ephemeral, layering multiple temporal dimensions within a single moment. In his works, we perceive not only a captured instant of daily life but also the underlying currents of the unconscious. His creative process begins with intentionally capturing moments beyond conscious awareness. The lingering resonance of a piano fading into silence. The traces left by a thought, an unintended gap between intentions. These layers gradually merge, maintaining a delicate balance, culminating in a singular motif. By intentionally withholding subjectivity, he creates space for interpretation, allowing the work to serve as a metaphor for emotions that words cannot encapsulate, embedding a tangible texture into the inner self.Eventually, the viewer stands quietly before the work, resonating with their own memories and emotions, gaining a new perspective on the most intimate yet elusive theme of daily life. In this space where the existent and the vanishing intersect, the viewer begins to trace the contours of their thoughts and memories with a quiet fingertip, slowly uncovering the image that floats between what fades and what remains.
